Pack Your Bags: 5 of the Best Vegan Holiday Destinations

Food is an exciting part of any holiday. Wherever you go, it’s great to sample the local flavours and treat yourself to some culinary delights that you can’t get back home.

But as vegans, we’re not spoilt for choice in every part of the world. The last thing you want is to end up abroad after hours on a plane, only to find yourself limited to one or two restaurants for the duration of your trip. Not to mention the dreaded “vegan options” at mostly carnist eateries!

Not to worry. We’ve put together a list of the best vegan holiday destinations. But first...

Best vegan travel destinations – going beyond cities!

Before we get started, it’s worth mentioning how great most cities are for vegan food – particularly capitals and big cities throughout Europe. From Madrid to Milan and London to Lisbon, you’ll find an array of vegan options in these destinations for several reasons:

  • Cities have larger, more diverse populations, which include lots of dietary preferences like veganism.

  • They also attract more people who are young, health-conscious or environmentally aware – all correlating positively with a vegan diet.

  • These places get more tourists, many of whom will be vegan.

  • Urban food scenes are naturally more competitive, and being vegan is a way to stand out. While the zillionth carnist joint on the block might not get much footfall, a plant-based café markets itself to certain customers.

As a vegan, you’re probably well aware that most cities are vegan-friendly – we don’t need to bore you with a list of capitals you can visit! Instead, we’ll try and dig a little deeper using first-hand experience and insights we’ve gathered over the years.

1. Sun yourself in Palma de Mallorca

We’ll start with our personal favourite – Palma de Mallorca. Mallorca has all the ingredients of a great holiday spot. Beautiful beaches, great weather and it’s only 2-3 hours depending on where you’re flying from in the UK. Now add to that the growing vegan scene, and you can see why it strides onto our list of the best vegan holiday destinations.

Some top picks from our travels are:

  • Ca n’Ela – Intimate spot with an ever-changing menu – fingers crossed you get to try the beetroot pasta!

  • La Mujer de Verde – Sample the €20 set lunch menu or plump for the evening a la carte.

  • Brunchit – A popular Spanish brunch chain with some great vegan options, especially the pa amb tomàquet (Catalan tomato bread).

2. Go east to Ubud in Bali, Indonesia

Bali is well known by many people for its wellness retreats – and this naturally lends itself to veganism. There’s a sizeable overlap in wellness and the vegan diet, with a focus on nourishing the body, eating whole foods and reaping the rewards of antioxidants.

Ubud, in particular, is one of the best vegan travel destinations if you don’t mind the longer journey. Expect an abundance of locally grown, organic produce. As Bali’s wellness capital, it also has plenty of places serving raw vegan, macrobiotic and Ayurvedic food:

  • Alchemy – Raw vegan café with a salad bar and health elixirs.

  • Sayuri Healing Food – Raw/vegan cuisine and a community space with classes.

  • Zest – Beautiful jungle views with a fusion of Balinese and international plant-based food.

3. Visit Tulum on Mexico’s Riviera Maya

Mexico is a popular holiday spot for sun-seekers and foodies alike, but it’s also another top pick for wellness retreats. From yoga studies to cacao rituals and Mayan sweat lodges, you’ll find plenty of spiritual experiences – and many wellness retreats are fully vegan.

But you don’t have to do the downward dog or take a vow of silence to try the vegan delights. Tulum offers plenty of vegan restaurants amid a backdrop of white beaches and ancient Mayan ruins. Here are some of the top picks:

  • Raw Love – A peaceful plant-based café with an earthy aesthetic.

  • Burrito Amor – Flavour-packed burritos and bowls

  • Taqueria La Vegan – Mouth-watering vegan tacos with a choice of tasty sides

4. Hit the road to Rhodes

Greece is famous for its sun-soaked islands and fresh Mediterranean food – and Rhodes is no exception. This historic island is a treasure trove of plant-based eats, blending traditional Greek flavours with creative cruelty-free twists – making it one of the best vegan travel destinations.

You’ll find everything from vegan gyros and falafel wraps to coconut-milk ice cream and dairy-free loukoumades. Whether you're wandering the cobbled streets of the Old Town or dining by the sea, Rhodes makes it easy to eat well without compromising your values. These spots are definitely worth trying:

  • Ono by Marouli – A delicious vegetarian and vegan menu spanning pasta dishes and salads to junk food that hits the spot.

  • Zaytouna – While it’s not solely plant-based, this gyros spot has some tasty vegan options on offer, like the falafel pita.

  • Paneri – Expect creative vegan options like beetroot carpaccio and vegetable ravioli

5. Go green in the Italian Alps

Italy might be known for pizza and parmesan, but South Tyrol offers a different kind of culinary charm – one where Alpine traditions meet modern, plant-based innovation. This mountainous region in northern Italy is quietly becoming a vegan hotspot, with seasonal produce, foraged herbs and a growing number of fully vegan hotels and restaurants.

From dumplings stuffed with wild greens to dairy-free apple strudel and creative takes on traditional Tyrolean dishes, South Tyrol proves you don’t need meat or cheese to enjoy bold, comforting flavours. Whether you’re hiking through the Dolomites or relaxing in a spa hotel, there’s no shortage of satisfying vegan options. Don’t miss these standout places:

  • Vegabula – Delicious vegan lunch options with breathtaking mountain views.

  • La Vimea – Italy’s first fully vegan hotel and restaurant, nestled in Val Venosta.

  • Humus Bistro (Bolzano) – As a bio restaurant, Humus only uses organic produce. As you might expect, it has some excellent vegan options.
