We’ll be with our pals at Balance Brewery to launch our new beer! Plantain reclaim.
I wanted to bring in my love of plantain and see what it would taste like in a beer. But I didn’t want to create a whole load of waste in the process. Plantain skins are completely edible and are used in many African stews. I've never been able to utilise them due to time and space, so up until now I’ve been composting them.
I rang and messaged as many African and Caribbean food businesses as I could—anyone I knew who used plantain—and asked if I could take the skins off their hands instead of letting them go to waste. It took two weeks of 6am wake-ups, drives into town, and many skins later… but we got enough!!!
I asked if I could be part of the whole process. We picked the base beer, placed the skins in to ferment and infuse their sweet caramel flavour. Weeks passed. Then it was time for bottling and a second ferment—once we were happy with the taste and sugar levels.
Months later, we have a beer ready for you to try. EXCITING! Thank you again to James and Will at Balance for guiding me through the process and giving me an insight into what it takes to create such delicious beers. It’s not easy—BIG respect.
Plantain Reclaim is a very easy-drinking beer with sweet caramel and vanilla notes, reminiscent of fried plantain.
